MY FAVOURITE READING STRATEGIES

Reading is one of the main goals we follow at school.

Reading not also means understanding texts, but also learning how to study, problems resolutions, etc. so it is the basis of Education.

The most important thing is to develop our children reading habit. But, how we can do it.

After some years working as a teacher, I have been changing some strategies:

1st Grade:

- My students only read aloud in the classroom when they are ready to do it  and we start by reading the activity statements.

- We visit the Municipal Library and they get the Library Card needed to get any book they want from the library.

- Short Reading Comprehension Texts with very simple questions.

- Reading Race: we display a big chart with the name of all the students and all of them belong to a "Reading Club". For this club, they have to present in the classroom the books they read at home, talking about the tittle and what the book is about. Finally, the teacher helps them identify the author, the illustrator, the protagonist, etc. of the book.

- Riddles: every day one student read a very small riddle hide in a big envelope.

- Reading the books they like when they finish the tasks they had to do.

2nd Grade:

- We start reading books in the School Library: we (all the children together) read a book related to the Learning Situation we are working in the trimester. Every two or three pages, we talk about what have happened to the characters of the book.

- Reading Race: we display a big chart with the name of all the students and all of them belong to a "Reading Club". For this club, they have to present in the classroom the books they read at home, talking about the tittle and what the book is about. Finally, their classmates ask them who the author, illustrator, etc. is, if they liked or didn´t like and why, etc.

- Travelling Books: every trimester they take one travelling Book to their home. For instance, "Endangered Animals riddles", the students have to look for information about one endangered animal that they like and write about it. Then, they bring the book to the classroom, read it to their classmates and they have to try to guess what animal is it.

- Reading Comprehension Texts with more complex questions.

- Reading the books they like when they finish the tasks they had to do.

- Riddles: every day one student read a very small riddle hide in a big envelope related to the Learning Situation we are working at school.

To end, I would say that encourage our students reading habits and motivate them to read is one of the most important challenges of Education nowdays.
