STORYJUMPER "ALL ABOUT ME!"

Task: “StoryJumper”
As I have of group of early ages students, I decided to work with “Storyjumper” following some steps:

1.- I created my own “Storyjumper” book.
2.- I Uploaded my book to my blog.
3.- I showed my book to my students.
4.- They thought about the information they wanted to share in their own book and write it in their notebooks.
5.- They worked in groups by reading all the written information so they could revise their classmates´ mistakes and also give them some advice.
6.- Every student created his/her own book and with the help of the teacher recorded their story with their own voices.

The main goal of this task was to improve our students´ writing skills but what we got was an improvement also in their reading and speaking skills.
These were the objectives we got by working through this task:

The students really enjoyed recording their voices for the story, although we had to change the computer we started working with because it was not able to record audios. We fixed it just using the teacher´s portable computer.
Finally, the stories were displayed in the classroom using the smart board that we have and the students were really proud of themselves.

ALBOX FASHION WEEK

For this third Term we are analyzing the climate in Albox. That is why in our subject (English) we are going to focus on the weather and temperature as well as the clothes we wear depending on the weather.

We will introduce the vocabulary throughtout the Educational Platform Moodle:

Previously at home:

1.- First, The students will watch the following video, focusing on the importance of listening to the vocabulary and repeating what they listen (It will be displayed in the English course in Moodle):

LISTEN AND REPEAT (CLOTHES)

2.- Secondly, the students will listen and choose the appropriate answers with the following video also displayed in Moodle. They will have to send to the teacher a screenshot with the best marks:

LISTEN AND ANSWER

In the classroom:

1.- Game time (groups): they will listen and answer to the questions using the Edpuzzle video:

LISTEN AND ANSWER

2.- Speaking Practice: some of them will get the role of models and we will start describing what they are wearing (He is wearing /She is wearing).

3.- Game time (individually using the smart board): our students will read a sentence related to the clothes and will choose the appropriate picture:

READ AND CHOOSE THE CORRECT OPTION

Albox Fashion Week: all of them will get the role of models and also speakers describing what their classmates are wearing (He is wearing /She is wearing).

The flipped Classroom helped us to introduce the vocabulary so they could learn it easier and quicker. They could watch the videos as many times as they wanted, so this helped to attend to diversity in the Classroom.

TIMETOAST

            TIMETOAST: “The Climate in Albox”

Level: 2nd Grade (Primary Education)

This last trimester we are analyzing the climate in Albox focusing on the problem we have with the water. We have been analyzing everyday weather and temperature. We have used this information to elaborate our TimeToast.

Timetoast has been very useful for the students in order to have a quick view of the information we have been collecting.

First, we collected the information we needed to do the timetoast; second, I taught how to elaborate the timetoast to my pupils; finally, we, all together, created in the classroom our TimeToast.

It was a new tool and the students were really motivated to use it.

If my students were older I could use it in other ways, but with my eight years old students this kind of activity has been perfect.

MY FAVOURITE READING STRATEGIES

Reading is one of the main goals we follow at school.

Reading not also means understanding texts, but also learning how to study, problems resolutions, etc. so it is the basis of Education.

The most important thing is to develop our children reading habit. But, how we can do it.

After some years working as a teacher, I have been changing some strategies:

1st Grade:

- My students only read aloud in the classroom when they are ready to do it  and we start by reading the activity statements.

- We visit the Municipal Library and they get the Library Card needed to get any book they want from the library.

- Short Reading Comprehension Texts with very simple questions.

- Reading Race: we display a big chart with the name of all the students and all of them belong to a "Reading Club". For this club, they have to present in the classroom the books they read at home, talking about the tittle and what the book is about. Finally, the teacher helps them identify the author, the illustrator, the protagonist, etc. of the book.

- Riddles: every day one student read a very small riddle hide in a big envelope.

- Reading the books they like when they finish the tasks they had to do.

2nd Grade:

- We start reading books in the School Library: we (all the children together) read a book related to the Learning Situation we are working in the trimester. Every two or three pages, we talk about what have happened to the characters of the book.

- Reading Race: we display a big chart with the name of all the students and all of them belong to a "Reading Club". For this club, they have to present in the classroom the books they read at home, talking about the tittle and what the book is about. Finally, their classmates ask them who the author, illustrator, etc. is, if they liked or didn´t like and why, etc.

- Travelling Books: every trimester they take one travelling Book to their home. For instance, "Endangered Animals riddles", the students have to look for information about one endangered animal that they like and write about it. Then, they bring the book to the classroom, read it to their classmates and they have to try to guess what animal is it.

- Reading Comprehension Texts with more complex questions.

- Reading the books they like when they finish the tasks they had to do.

- Riddles: every day one student read a very small riddle hide in a big envelope related to the Learning Situation we are working at school.

To end, I would say that encourage our students reading habits and motivate them to read is one of the most important challenges of Education nowdays.

Reflect of Reading habits

 1. What kind of books or texts are the people reading?

Some people are reading novels, one of them is reading a text (we do not know exactly the kind of text) using the Tablet and another one is reading the newspaper.

2. Did they choose the books themselves or did someone else choose for them?

It seems that all of them except the children in the fourth picture, who are reading the same book together, are reading by pleasure so they could have chosen their books.

3. Describe how they might be feeling at the moment and give reasons.

The people at the library seem to be enjoying reading peacefully so they could be calm.

It will also depend on the kind of book they are reading. If they are reading a novel with policemen and murderers, they could be nervous, excited, scared, etc.

4. Focus on one or two of the photos and say how they relate to your own experience as a reader in L1 (Spanish) and L2 (English or another foreign language).

L1/L2: My experience is related to the first and fourth pictures.

The first picture makes me feel relax while reading and reminds me to pleasant moments enjoying reading, but the fourth one makes me feel a little anxious because it reminds me when I had to read a book I was not interested in and I could not but I had to finish the book.

Think about the following things:

- What texts do you enjoy reading in each language that you speak?

L1: I love to read mystery novels which make me travel away.

L2: I do not usually read novels. I prefer to read articles related to my proffesion.

- Do you choose the same kind of texts or do you read very different things depending on the language? What factors determine your choice?

I do not read the same in both languages because I have not the same skill while I read in L1 or in L2.

- In what format do you read (paper, e-reader, online etc.)?

I still prefer to read in paper.

- When do you read?

I read every day because of my proffesion but I do not read novels because I need to have time. That means I read for pleasure (novels) on holidays.
